Blue Cross of Northeastern Pennsylvania got its start right here in Wilkes-Barre in 1938. That’s when our company was formed as the Hospital Service Association of Northeastern Pennsylvania by local industrialist, George Bell.

After just one year of operation, our membership had risen to an impressive total of 10,140. Back then, a family could obtain coverage for $1.90 per month. In return, each family member was guaranteed up to 21 days of semi-private hospital accommodations.

Today, we’re nearly 600,000 members strong, and proudly serve the many businesses and families within our highly diverse 13-county service area.
