Captain Kid School Program
The Captain Kid Program is an exciting example of Blue Cross of Northeastern
Pennsylvania’s commitment to extending health and wellness education into
schools. Over the past six years, Captain Kid’s Health Crew has educated nearly
5,000 children throughout our 13-county service
area. The program, which is available at no charge to any school located within
Blue Cross of Northeastern Pennsylvania’s service area, encourages children to
proactively contribute to their own well-being. Its message is one of
prevention, and taking responsibility for one’s health by making healthy
choices such as using preventive health care services, eating healthier foods,
taking safety precautions and being as physically active as one’s health will
allow.
The program is presented to first- and second-grade students in small group
settings, and is available on the topics of nutrition, safety and personal
hygiene. Each session lasts approximately one half-hour, featuring interactive
fun led by a member of Captain Kid’s Health Crew. Through the use of colorful
visuals and handouts, Captain Kid’s Crew Member illustrates the importance of
healthy behaviors. Students learn through hands-on activities, educational
materials and take-home items.
While the message of this program is aimed at children, we all can recognize the
value of Blue Cross of Northeastern Pennsylvania’s goal – to encourage everyone
to pursue wellness by forming healthy eating habits, participating in fitness
activities, practicing good hygiene and safety, and leading an overall healthy
life.
The actions children take today can help them grow up to be tomorrow’s healthy
adults. For more information on this program, or to arrange a presentation at
your school, contact Leigh Ann Wiedlich 570-200-6302.
