Vital Statistics
Kate Dickson
  • Age 66
  • Resident of Luzurne County
  • Disaster Response Team Member
  • Mother of Two
  • Breast Cancer Survivor
Kate’s breast cancer was detected after a yearly mammogram. While going through chemotherapy and radiation treatments, Kate decided to shave her head and wear hats. The joke among her family and friends was that she was putting Don, her husband, into bankruptcy buying hats!

Always active in her church, Kate stayed involved during her cancer treatments, even serving as the chairperson for her church’s annual ham dinner. In 2006, Kate and her husband joined United Methodist Volunteers in Mission, a disaster response effort. Volunteers help rebuild homes that have been damaged by hurricanes or other disasters, and Kate has participated in five such disaster response trips.

Today, Kate stays young by enjoying time with her grandchildren and walking several miles a day with her husband. She truly believes that early detection is the best way to save lives, and she never turns down an opportunity to share her experiences and remind others to get their annual mammograms.
