Ivelisse Fuentes
  • Age 48
  • Resident of Monroe County
  • Ultrasound Technologist
  • Mother of Two Daughters
  • Breast Cancer Survivor
It was a self-examination that helped Ivelisse Fuentes first detect her breast cancer. Though she had her annual mammogram nine months earlier, the cancer was undetected due to the location of the tumor. That’s why Ivelisse, an ultrasound technologist at Pocono Medical Center, is an advocate of self-exams in conjunction with annual mammograms.

During her treatment, Ivelisse didn’t miss a day of work. She credits the support she received from family members and co-workers as being key to her recovery, and says that time management took on new importance as she balanced work and family responsibilities while going through her treatment.

Once her treatment was over, Ivelisse continued her martial arts studies. She’s been involved in martial arts for five years and currently holds a Brown Belt.

Ivelisse is not happy that she had breast cancer. But she says “The experience made me part of a bigger family—the family of breast cancer survivors—and I’m very proud to be a member of that group.”
