Lula wouldn’t have known she had breast cancer if it wasn’t for her first two grandchildren. Since her four grandchildren are very active, she thought it would be wise to schedule a routine physical for herself to make sure she could keep up with them. During the physical, her doctor suggested she also have a mammogram, and that’s how her cancer was detected.

Lula had a lumpectomy followed by radiation treatment. She credits her family, especially her husband of 30 years and her youngest sister, for supporting her throughout her fight.

Today, Lula and her family participate in many breast cancer awareness activities. They join in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure every year, and Lula and her friends also support the “Rally for a Cure” golf tournament in Factoryville. Her husband even bow-hunts with pink arrows to support the cause!

When you meet Lula, she’s usually wearing pink as a way to encourage others to be proactive in conducting self-exams and scheduling their mammograms. “Breast cancer awareness is a year-round commitment,” says Lula, “not just something to be done during Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October.”
