Sylvia Bailey
Age 74
Resident of Wayne County
Grandmother of Six
Certified Mastectomy Fitter
Two-Time Breast Cancer Survivor
Sylvia suspected that something was wrong when she felt a strange sensation in her breast. A diagnosis of breast cancer was confirmed through a mammogram and a biopsy. Then, twelve years later, breast cancer was detected again by her annual mammogram.
Sylvia says that a very supportive husband and family, her wonderful doctors, and her strong faith in God got her through her recovery.
Her doctors were so impressed with Sylvia’s positive attitude about her decision to have a mastectomy that they encouraged her to visit with other breast cancer patients who had reservations about the surgery. Sylvia made many new friendships during this time, and she eventually became a certified mastectomy fitter. In her nearly 12 years working at Andrew Brown’s Home Health Center in Scranton, Sylvia has helped countless women to feel comfortable with themselves after a mastectomy.
Sylvia feels great today and spends as much time as possible with her family and her grandchildren. Her advice is, “when the world gives you lemons, make lemonade! And keep busy. Don’t sit around and worry—keep a positive attitude and fight!” .
