Breast Cancer Survivor
Rachel noticed a small lump in her breast during a self-examination. Her hairdresser and good friend encouraged her to go to her doctor for further evaluation, and a biopsy confirmed it was cancer.
Rachel had a lumpectomy, followed by chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Her name was added to several prayer lists, and neighbors joined together to supply meals for her and her family while she underwent treatment. She credits her strong faith in God, and the support of family and friends, with helping her through recovery.
An outdoor enthusiast, Rachel and her husband had participated in the Bald Eagle Mountain Megatransect prior to her diagnosis. The Megatransect is a 25-mile endurance hike and trail run in Central Pennsylvania. One of her goals during treatment was that she and her husband would one day participate in the Megatransect again… and they did, in the fall of 2008!
Rachel spreads the message of awareness that breast cancer can strike anyone at any time. But annual screenings, early detection, and recent advances in breast cancer research offer so much hope in the fight against this disease.
