Lindsay Newmyer
Age 26
Resident of Monroe County
Elementary School Teacher
Breast Health Advocate
Breast Cancer Survivor
At the age of 24, Lindsay discovered a lump on her breast through a self-exam. She went for an examination right away, and though her mammogram was inconclusive, an ultrasound showed a mass. The mass was removed—she had stage 1 breast cancer.
Surgery, radiation treatments, chemotherapy and breast reconstruction followed. Subsequent testing has shown no recurrence of her breast cancer.
In October of 2009, Lindsay participated in the Philadelphia Breast Cancer 3-Day, 60-mile walk to benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure®. Although the event was shortened to one day because of bad weather conditions, Lindsay was proud to help raise money for the search for a cure. Her story caught the attention of staff at Pocono Medical Center, and they’ve asked her to become involved in reaching out to young women regarding women’s health. Lindsay enthusiastically agreed and is excited about becoming a breast health advocate.
Today, she says things are “back to normal.” She’s back at the gym, playing volleyball, and teaching first grade, and she recently became a homeowner. “Early detection is the key,” she says. “I was very lucky to have found the lump so early.”
