Carol Vogrin
Age 61
Resident of Wyoming County
Bookkeeper
Mother of One
Two-Time Breast Cancer Survivor
When Carol’s breast cancer was detected by a mammogram in 2004, she had a radical mastectomy of her right breast. Carol was vigilant about having periodic testing done in the years that followed, and in January of 2009, her cancer had returned, resulting in a radical mastectomy of her left breast.
Carol’s husband, Pete, and her sister, who is a nurse, were both very supportive caregivers during her treatment. Her strong faith in prayer and her church family helped her through recovery, too.
As a two-time survivor, Carol is a strong supporter of the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life in Wyoming County, where she always participates in the Survivor’s Lap. She’s also served as a mentor for several other women who have been faced with breast cancer.
Says Carol, “Each year, as you approach your birthday, celebrate the gift of life by getting a mammogram.” Carol did not have a detectable lump on either occasion when her breast cancer was diagnosed. “Without a mammogram,” she says, “my cancer would have gone undetected.”
