WILKES-BARRE – The Blue Ribbon Foundation of Blue Cross of Northeastern Pennsylvania recently awarded a $3,660.00 grant to Trehab to support medication safety education for older adults in Susquehanna County.
Statistics show that adults over 65 consume more than 30% of all medications prescribed and purchase 40% of all over-the-counter medications. Medication safety education can help older adults reduce the chance of misuse and negative interactions which can result in emergency room visits, hospitalizations, and increased health care costs.
Thanks to The Blue Ribbon Foundation’s grant, Trehab’s Medication Safety Education Program will be offered at no cost to 300 seniors and 50 caregivers at 12 senior centers and nursing homes across the county in the coming year. Workshops led by Trehab’s certified education specialists will address topics such as safe and appropriate medication practices, recognizing common side effects and how to reduce or avoid medication errors.
Montrose Square Apartments resident Betty Estabrook recently participated in a workshop at that location. “The workshop was very informative and I appreciated the tips we received to help avoid a medication error,” said Betty.
"This grant is a great example of how The Blue Ribbon Foundation continues to address some of the most pressing health issues faced by older adults," said Cynthia A. Yevich, The Foundation’s executive director.
