Adult dependents can stay on family policies in advance of federal law
April 21, 2010, Wilkes-Barre, PA – Blue Cross of Northeastern Pennsylvania announced today that it will allow adult dependents to remain covered on their parents’ policies in advance of the new federal health care reform law.
Health care reform legislation signed into law last month by President Obama will allow adult children up to age 26 to remain covered on an existing policy that renews on or after September 23, 2010. Recognizing that a coverage gap could result for many young people due to their age and student status, including graduation from school and other factors, BCNEPA has chosen to accelerate this timeline and allow covered individuals under age 26 to remain on their parents’ health insurance policies beginning June 1. This applies to individual and group policies.
“While the new dependent care reform law is a good step in extending coverage to our nation’s graduating students, it also creates a gap for those young people who graduate in advance of the legislation taking effect on September 23,” said Denise S. Cesare, President and CEO of BCNEPA. “We’ve decided to accelerate the coverage timeline so that we can close this gap. This is just one example of our ongoing commitment to translate this complex legislation into coverage that works for our members.”
Health Care Reform Resources Available on BCNEPA Home Page
To help its members better understand the new legislation and its timetable for implementation, Blue Cross of Northeastern Pennsylvania recently launched an online resource for information on reform.
The site — accessible from the company homepage, www.bcnepa.com — helps explain the changes occurring this year that impact members’ policies and provides links to other helpful web sites. This resource will be updated regularly as Blue Cross of Northeastern Pennsylvania and others in the health care system work to understand the new and complex health reform legislation.
