WILKES-BARRE-- The Blue Ribbon Foundation of Blue Cross of Northeastern Pennsylvania recently awarded a $9,900.00 grant to Tioga Dental Services to support dental care for uninsured children in Bradford County.
Tioga Dental Services (TDS) was established in 2009 with the help of a $200,000 PA Department of Health grant and accepts patients of all ages on Medical Assistance. Since 2009, the clinic has provided dental exams, cleanings, x-rays, fluoride treatments and sealants to 2,000 un/underinsured children and adults.
The Blue Ribbon Foundation’s grant will help the clinic expand its preventive dental program to include the application of sealants for 370 un/underinsured children under age 6 with high risk of dental caries. Dental caries is a chronic and progressive disease, and is seen frequently in areas that do not have fluoride in their primary water source. Sealant application is a simple and effective treatment proven to prevent or reduce the incidence of dental caries.
"Proper oral health care starts at an early age and is vital to staying healthy,” said Robert Borzok, executive director, Tioga Dental Services. “We thank The Blue Ribbon Foundation for its generous support of our efforts to provide higher quality, cost effective dental care for our young patients.”
"For many uninsured children in Bradford County, Tioga Dental Services is their only option for dental care,” said Cynthia Yevich, executive director of The Blue Ribbon Foundation. “Supporting programs like this is an important part of our efforts to keep kids healthy.”
