Free online resources provide nutrition education and advice for families
March 8, 2012, Wilkes-Barre, PA — Proper nutrition is an essential factor for good overall health. That’s the message Blue Cross of Northeastern Pennsylvania (BCNEPA) wants to share in recognizing March as National Nutrition Month.
“With proper nutrition, our bodies receive natural sources of vitamins, minerals and other essential nutrients to keep us healthy and prevent disease,” said Nina M. Taggart, M.A., M.D., M.B.A., Vice President of Clinical Operations and Interim Chief Medical Officer, BCNEPA.
To help everyone make informed decisions about their nutrition and lifestyle choices, BCNEPA includes free information on the wellness section of its website, available at https://www.bcnepa.com/Wellness.aspx. Visitors will find links to Blue Health SolutionsSM newsletters that contain nutritional tips and other information about specific conditions, children’s health and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
“Selecting proper amounts of healthy foods and avoiding foods containing solid fats, added sugar and salt can significantly cut our risk for diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease,” said Taggart. “A balanced diet can also reduce the likelihood of getting the flu, colds and other infections. So everyone, including children, should understand the importance of nutrition.”
To help educate children, BCNEPA's Health eTools initiative produces Health eTips for Parents newsletters with ideas on how families can engage in healthy habits at home. The information can be viewed and downloaded at https://www.bcnepa.com/Community/eTools.aspx.
In addition, the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association’s Good Health Club toolkit promotes healthy choices and behaviors in children through fun, effective, age-appropriate communications on its website: http://www.bcbs.com/healthcare-partners/good-health-club-toolkit/good-health-club-physician.html. The site includes tip sheets, brochures and posters that can be downloaded and printed.
“Knowledge is the first step toward better health,” said Taggart. “People need to understand what choices they should be making to maintain health and wellness at every age. Our online resources make it easier for people to access information that can help.”
