Member Security Update

You and your covered family members may be concerned because Excellus BlueCross BlueShield recently experienced a serious data breach. Please know the data breach does not affect the data systems of Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield or Blue Cross of Northeastern Pennsylvania members who have received medical services within our local provider network.

While we were not directly affiliated with Excellus BlueCross BlueShield, some of our member information may have been compromised, because Excellus BlueCross BlueShield and other Blue plans, including ours, have an arrangement knowns as BlueCard®. This means that our members can receive medical care when they travel to a region that Excellus BlueCross BlueShield serves, which includes 31 counties in upstate New York.

We are working closely with Excellus BlueCross BlueShield and the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association on this incident. However, because of the size of this incident, identifying and subsequently notifying affected members is not something that can be done quickly. If your personal information was included in this cyberattack, you and any affected family members will be notified.

In the meantime, Excellus BlueCross BlueShield has set up a website to provide information about the data breach, free credit monitoring and identify theft protection services. For more information, visit excellusfacts.com.
